Traditional satellite uses one fixed target
Legacy satellite internet normally communicates with a geostationary satellite roughly 22,000 miles above Earth. Because that satellite appears stationary from the ground, the dish is mechanically aimed at one precise point and remains there.
Once aligned, the dish does not follow satellites across the sky. A clear line toward that fixed orbital position is essential, and even a small aiming error can prevent service.
Starlink uses a moving constellation
Starlink operates thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit. They move across the sky relative to the customer, so the terminal electronically steers its beam, communicates with available satellites, and hands the connection from one path to another.
The dish itself does not have to mechanically chase every satellite. Its phased-array surface performs that tracking electronically within a broad field of view.
Why lower orbit changes latency
The shorter distance to low-Earth-orbit satellites reduces the time required for data to travel between the ground and space. That is why Starlink can support video calls, gaming, remote work, and interactive browsing more effectively than many traditional geostationary services.
Actual performance still depends on congestion, Wi-Fi, plan priority, weather, and the destination on the internet. Low orbit improves the physical path but does not eliminate every source of delay.

Starlink needs more open sky
A legacy dish may work through a narrow opening if that opening points directly at its one satellite. Starlink needs a much broader section of sky because its satellites move and the terminal must complete handoffs.
This is why an old satellite-dish location is not automatically a good Starlink location. The mast may be reusable, but the surrounding roof, trees, and wall can obstruct the wider field Starlink requires.
Redundancy and moving paths
When one Starlink satellite leaves view, another can take over. The network also uses multiple ground stations and routing paths. This flexibility supports resilience and allows the constellation to serve areas where terrestrial options are limited.
It does not mean obstructions are irrelevant. If trees block every usable path at the same moment, the connection can still pause until another clear satellite path becomes available.
Installation priorities are different
Traditional installation emphasizes exact mechanical aiming at one point. Starlink installation emphasizes broad sky visibility, correct app-guided orientation, structural mounting, cable routing, and a location that remains practical through seasonal changes.
Understanding that difference prevents one of the most common mistakes: placing Starlink wherever the old dish sat without checking whether the moving constellation can actually be seen.
