Every property and Starlink project is different. This guide explains the practical factors considered during professional installation and helps you prepare informed questions before work begins.

Start with the correct Starlink hardware

This guide focuses on the router supplied with recent Starlink Standard Kits, including the Router 3 commonly paired with the non-actuated Standard dish. Starlink Mini and Performance systems use different hardware arrangements, and older Standard generations may place the light in another location or use slightly different behavior.

Before relying on the light alone, identify the kit and router generation in the Starlink app or on the equipment label. The app remains the best place to confirm alerts because one light can only communicate a limited amount of information.

Blinking white: trying to connect

A blinking white light normally means the router is starting, rebooting, updating, or trying to establish an internet connection. This is expected for a short period after power is connected. The dish and router may need several minutes to start and communicate with the network.

If the light continues blinking for an extended period, check that every cable is fully seated, the dish cable is undamaged, and the Starlink app does not show a disconnected-cable or offline alert. Current Router 3 guidance states that a router unable to connect after approximately 20 minutes may change to red.

Solid white: connected

A solid white light means the router has connected to the internet. On recent hardware, the light may turn off after about one hour even though the system remains online and is functioning normally. That automatic dimming is why an unlit router is not always evidence of a power failure.

If devices still cannot browse while the light is solid white, the problem may be between the device and router rather than between Starlink and the satellites. Confirm that the device is joined to the correct Wi-Fi network, then use the app's advanced speed test to compare device-to-router performance with router-to-internet performance.

Red: not connected to the internet

A red light generally means the router has power but is not connected to the internet. Check the Starlink app for an outage, obstruction, cable, alignment, or hardware alert. Inspect the cable ends and visible cable run without repeatedly unplugging connectors or forcing them into place.

Power-cycle the system once by disconnecting power, waiting briefly, and reconnecting it. Allow the system enough time to restart. If the light returns to red and the app cannot identify a correctable issue, Starlink Support may need the system diagnostics.

Flashing red: possible hardware fault

Some Standard router guidance distinguishes a flashing red light from a steady red light. Flashing red can indicate a hardware fault. Starlink recommends checking the outlet and cables and performing a power cycle. A different known-working outlet can help separate an equipment problem from a failed receptacle or power strip.

Do not repeatedly factory-reset the router as a first troubleshooting step. A reset erases the Wi-Fi name, password, bypass setting, and other configuration, but it cannot repair a failed cable, power supply, router, or dish.

Off: normal dimming or no power

An off light has two common explanations on current Standard routers. If the router was solid white and the internet still works, the status light may have turned off automatically after approximately one hour. If the Wi-Fi network is gone and the system is unreachable, the router may not be receiving power.

Confirm that the power cord is secure at the router and outlet, the power strip or surge protector is switched on, and the receptacle works with another safe device. Look for heat damage, odor, discoloration, or a loose connector. Stop using any component that appears electrically damaged.

Use the light and app together

The light is a quick first clue, not a complete diagnosis. The Starlink app can distinguish between searching, booting, disconnected, obstructed, misaligned, updating, and network-outage conditions that may look similar at the router.

Record the light behavior and any app alert before moving cables or resetting equipment. That information makes professional troubleshooting or a Starlink Support request much more useful.
