What bypass mode does
Bypass mode allows a compatible third-party router to take over the main networking duties normally handled by the Starlink router. The Starlink equipment continues providing the internet connection, but its built-in Wi-Fi and routing functions are disabled or passed through so the customer's preferred router can manage the home or business network.
This creates a cleaner arrangement than operating two full routers in sequence. The third-party router becomes responsible for Wi-Fi, device addresses, firewall rules, Ethernet connections, parental controls, and any other features it supports.
Why customers choose their own router
Starlink's router is designed to make setup simple, which is useful for many homes. Customers with more advanced requirements may want features available on another system, such as additional Ethernet ports, stronger administrative controls, separate guest or device networks, parental controls, traffic monitoring, VPN features, or a more configurable firewall.
A preferred router may also be part of an existing mesh, security-camera, smart-home, or business network. Bypass mode lets the customer keep that network design while using Starlink as the internet source.
The physical connection
The third-party router must receive a wired Ethernet connection from the Starlink system. Depending on the Starlink router generation, this may use built-in Ethernet ports or require the compatible Starlink Ethernet adapter. The cable connects to the internet or WAN port of the third-party router.
After bypass mode is enabled in the Starlink app, devices should connect to the third-party router rather than the Starlink Wi-Fi network. Exact ports, adapters, and app steps vary by Starlink hardware generation, so the equipment should be identified before planning the change.

More Ethernet ports and network expansion
Many third-party routers include several LAN ports for computers, televisions, network switches, access points, cameras, and other wired equipment. If more ports are required, a compatible Ethernet switch can usually be connected to the third-party router to expand the wired network.
Wired connections can reduce Wi-Fi congestion and provide consistent links for stationary devices. The number and speed of the ports still matter; a router should be selected for the customer's actual equipment and expected network traffic.
Security and management advantages
Advanced routers may offer more detailed firmware updates, firewall settings, device isolation, threat filtering, usage reports, DNS controls, and separate networks for guests or smart devices. These features can improve visibility and control, but they are not automatically safer simply because the router is third-party.
Security depends on correct configuration, current firmware, strong administrator credentials, modern encryption, and ongoing maintenance. A feature-rich router that is never updated or configured properly can create more risk rather than less.
Tradeoffs to understand
Bypass mode adds ownership and flexibility, but it also shifts troubleshooting responsibility to the customer or network installer. The Starlink app may show less information about devices behind the third-party router, and support may ask that the standard Starlink configuration be restored while diagnosing some issues.
On many Starlink router generations, leaving bypass mode requires a factory reset of the Starlink router. Network names, passwords, and custom settings may then need to be configured again. Customers should understand the recovery process before making the change.
When bypass mode makes sense
Bypass mode is a strong choice for customers who already own a capable router, need advanced network features, want a specific third-party mesh platform, or require more wired connectivity than the standard setup provides. It may be unnecessary for a straightforward home that is already well served by the Starlink router.
The best router is not simply the one with the longest feature list. It is the one that supports the property's coverage, wired devices, security needs, and the owner's comfort with managing the system.
