Every property and Starlink project is different. This guide explains the practical factors considered during professional installation and helps you prepare informed questions before work begins.

The category printed on the jacket matters

Ethernet cables may use the same familiar RJ45-style plug while having very different construction and performance ratings. The category marking on the cable jacket identifies the standard it was manufactured to meet; the connector shape alone does not tell you its capability.

Cable category applies to ordinary Ethernet runs between routers, switches, computers, access points, and other network devices. The powered cable between a Starlink terminal and its power equipment may be a model-specific Starlink cable and should not automatically be treated as interchangeable generic Ethernet.

Cat5 is an outdated choice

Original Category 5 cable was commonly associated with 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet. That ceiling can bottleneck a modern wired connection and prevent a device from using the performance available from the router or internet service.

Old Cat5 found in a home may also have questionable terminations, damaged pairs, or only two pairs connected. It is generally not a good choice for a new Starlink-related network run.

Cat5e is not the same as Cat5

Cat5e improved the Category 5 standard with tighter requirements for crosstalk and is commonly used for Gigabit Ethernet over a properly installed run. Starlink's own Router Mini guidance specifies RJ45 Cat5e or greater when connecting to another Starlink router.

That means a sound Cat5e cable is not automatically too slow for most customers. Quality, conductor material, termination, run length, and damage all matter. A poorly made cable marked with a higher category can perform worse than a correctly installed Cat5e cable.

Why Cat6 is a strong new-install standard

Cat6 uses tighter pair control and often a central separator to reduce interference. It supports Gigabit Ethernet comfortably and can support higher link rates over shorter qualified runs when every connected component is compatible.

For new in-wall or structured-network installations, Cat6 provides sensible performance headroom and is widely available. Cat6A may be considered for longer 10-Gigabit links, high-interference areas, or commercial projects, but it is thicker and more demanding to terminate.

Starlink kits and cable terminology

Current Starlink hardware varies by model. Some kits include model-specific powered Starlink cable, while certain routers and accessories use standard RJ45 Ethernet connections. It would be misleading to say every cable in every Starlink kit is ordinary Cat6.

For third-party Ethernet connections, use Cat5e or greater as Starlink directs; Cat6 is the preferred choice for many new permanent runs. For the dish-to-power or dish-to-router connection, use the cable specifically approved for that Starlink model.

Installation quality determines the result

Maintain proper bend radius, avoid crushing the jacket, keep data cable separated from electrical conductors as required, and terminate every pair correctly. Use solid-copper, appropriately rated cable for permanent runs rather than copper-clad aluminum.

Outdoor, underground, plenum, and riser locations require cable and pathways rated for those environments. After installation, test the link speed and all wire pairs instead of relying only on the printed category.
