Every property and Starlink project is different. This guide explains the practical factors considered during professional installation and helps you prepare informed questions before work begins.
A low price does not guarantee usable equipment
A used terminal can be physically undamaged and still be unusable if it remains assigned to another account, is reported lost, has an unpaid obligation attached to the seller's service, or cannot be transferred in its current status. Do not treat a photograph of a powered dish as proof that you will be able to activate it. The ownership and account-release process should be addressed before money changes hands.
Confirm the exact kit and hardware identity
Ask for clear photographs of the terminal, router, power supply, cables, mount or kickstand, connectors, and identifying labels. Compare the hardware generation with the installation you intend to use because mounts, cables, power equipment, and router features are not universally interchangeable. Record the kit or terminal identifier shown through the seller's account process rather than relying on a handwritten description.
Require the seller to complete the transfer steps
The seller should follow Starlink's current transfer procedure from the account that owns the equipment. A buyer should never accept a promise that the seller will release it later. Use Starlink's current account instructions during the transaction, confirm that the equipment becomes available for activation, and keep a dated record of the exchange. Never ask for or accept the seller's password as a substitute for a proper transfer.

Inspect the equipment for expensive damage
Look closely for crushed or cut cable, bent connector ends, corrosion, water staining, heat damage, cracks, warped plastic, improvised splices, damaged mounting points, and a missing power supply. Ask how the dish was mounted and removed. Equipment pulled from a roof by its cable or stored with wet connectors may fail intermittently even if it starts once.
Check service availability before committing
Transferable hardware does not guarantee that the desired service plan is available at your address. Confirm the service address, intended plan, activation cost, and any current regional restrictions directly through Starlink before completing the purchase. Customers planning travel, business use, or a second property should verify that the equipment and plan fit that purpose.
Plan for installation as a separate decision
A used kit may arrive without suitable permanent mounting hardware or with a cable that is too short or damaged. Evaluate sky visibility, mount compatibility, cable route, router location, and replacement parts before scheduling. A professional installation cannot correct an account-locked terminal, so complete ownership and activation checks first.
